Maya Helps Her Friend
Maya and Lily were best friends who loved spending Saturday mornings at Oakdale Park. Every weekend, they raced each other to the swings and took turns pushing each other higher and higher. The park was full of children laughing and playing, but Maya and Lily always stayed together. Lily was swinging very high when her hands slipped off the chains. She flew forward and landed hard on the ground. Her knee was scraped and bleeding, and tears rolled down her cheeks. The other children nearby stopped playing and stared, but nobody moved to help. Maya did not hesitate. She jumped off her own swing and ran straight to Lily. She knelt down beside her friend and gently looked at the scrape. "It's going to be okay," Maya said softly. She took a clean tissue from her pocket and carefully pressed it against the cut to stop the bleeding. Maya helped Lily stand up slowly, letting Lily lean on her shoulder. Then Maya walked her over to the bench where their moms were sitting. Maya's mom cleaned the cut and put a bandage on it. Lily wiped her tears and gave Maya a big hug. "Thank you for helping me," Lily said. Maya smiled and replied, "That's what best friends are for."
