The Beach Cleanup

fiction · 336 words

Every Saturday morning, Sofia's family went to Crescent Beach. It was their favorite weekend tradition. Sofia loved building sandcastles near the shoreline and watching the foamy waves roll in. Her little brother, Marco, liked collecting shells and smooth stones. Their parents would set up chairs and read while the children played. The beach had always been a peaceful, beautiful place for their family. This Saturday, Sofia noticed something different as soon as they arrived. Trash was scattered across the sand. Plastic bottles, grocery bags, and candy wrappers dotted the shoreline. Near the rocks, Sofia spotted a seagull struggling on the ground. Fishing line was wrapped tightly around its legs and one wing. "Dad, look!" she cried. Her father carefully freed the bird, but Sofia couldn't stop thinking about all the garbage. "Why would people leave their trash here?" she asked, her voice shaking. The beach she loved was being ruined. That night, Sofia couldn't sleep. She kept picturing the tangled seagull and the dirty sand. By morning, she had a plan. She talked to her parents first, and they agreed to help. On Monday, Sofia spoke with her teacher, Mrs. Campbell, who helped her make flyers. Sofia and her classmates handed out flyers at school, at the grocery store, and in their neighborhood. They invited everyone to a community beach cleanup the following Saturday. Sofia also called the local news station, and a reporter said she would come cover the event. The next Saturday, Sofia arrived at the beach expecting maybe twenty people. Instead, more than fifty volunteers showed up wearing gloves and carrying trash bags. Families, students, and even the mayor came to help. By noon, they had filled twenty large bags with garbage. The beach looked clean and beautiful again. The news reporter interviewed Sofia, who said, "I was just one kid who was upset about trash, but look what happened when people worked together." Sofia learned that one person with a good idea can inspire an entire community to make a big difference.
