The Rainy Day Plan
Jake loved playing soccer at recess more than anything else at school. He and his friends had a game going all week, and today was supposed to be the big tiebreaker match. Jake had even practiced his goal kicks at home the night before. Just before recess, the sky turned dark gray and rain started pouring down. Their teacher, Mr. Davis, announced that outdoor recess was canceled and they would have indoor recess instead. Jake slumped in his chair and crossed his arms. The tiebreaker match would have to wait. Jake sat at his desk with his chin in his hands. His friend Carlos walked over and tapped him on the shoulder. "Come check out the game corner," Carlos said. "They have that new strategy game everyone has been talking about." Jake shrugged but followed Carlos to the back of the room where students were setting up the game. Once Jake started playing, he forgot all about the rain. The strategy game was exciting, and Jake discovered he was really good at it. He and Carlos teamed up and won two rounds in a row. The whole group laughed and cheered together. When the bell rang, Jake looked at the window and noticed the rain had stopped. But he did not mind that he had missed outdoor recess. "That was actually really fun," Jake told Carlos with a grin. He realized that rainy days could bring unexpected fun.
