Emma's First Day
It was Emma's first day at Riverside Elementary. Her family had just moved to a new town. As her mom drove her to school, Emma felt butterflies in her stomach. She stared at the big brick building and wondered if the other kids would be friendly. She did not know a single person. The morning went by slowly. When the lunch bell rang, Emma walked into the crowded cafeteria. Every table was full of children chatting and laughing with their friends. Emma gripped her lunch tray tightly and walked to an empty table in the corner. She sat down alone and stared at her sandwich. A girl with curly hair and a bright smile walked over to Emma's table. "Hi, I'm Mia. You look like you could use some company. Do you want to sit with me and my friends?" she asked. Emma felt her face turn red, but she nodded and managed a small smile. Mia picked up Emma's tray and led her to a table near the window where two other girls were sitting. Emma and Mia discovered they both loved reading the same book series. They talked and laughed through the rest of lunch, and Mia introduced Emma to her other friends. By the time the bell rang, Emma had a big smile on her face. Walking out of school that afternoon, Emma told her mom, "I made a new friend today!" She could not wait to come back tomorrow.
